A fun analogy for geology fans :). This is one of my earliest ideas for an illustration.  Check out this LinkedIn thread for a discussion about the topic.  Iain mcGowan suggested that an icicle might be a better analogy because if the drips stop, the icicle will melt due to ongoing competitive 'heat'.
